What do these colours mean?
This piece is called she gives me light and it was a metaphor for how painting colours gave me life during the pandemic when everyone’s mental health was not so full of colour to put it lightly. I remember painting this and it was on a big piece of wooden thin board.
I used oils and diluted the oils with white spirits to allow for a more smooth interaction with the paintbrush and the surface. It took me two days to finish this and this painting was probably where I began to take art seriously again, I had nothing to lose. The painting is almost an emotional reflection of how I felt at the time, I was very pensive.
This gloom and doom of the never ending restrictions altered everyone’s mood, and being an artist these emotions fed into the deep, dark and brooding colours. The oils I used for this were bought from Evans art supplies, I used their own original trademark brand as they were not as expensive as winsor and newtons, but the vibrancy of Evan’s oils really came through when a layer of gloss varnish was added to the work. This piece is still available in my collection.
